Protecting Sacred Natural Sites, biodiversity and indigenous knowledge.

Sacred Natural sites are more than places of spiritual and cultural importance. They are living ecosystems that conserve the biodiversity, protect indigenous knowledge and support livelihoods for communities. For generations, indigenous communities have protected these areas through customary laws, cultural values, rituals and customary governance systems led by custodians.This video, broadcast by UBC-Uganda’s national broadcaster, highlights sacred natural sites in Napak District in Karamoja and Buliisa District in western Uganda. It shows how these protected ecosystems conserve biodiversity, provide medicinal plants, support farming and food security, and preserve community identity. It also highlights the customary laws developed by the Bagungu to protect their indigenous land, sacred sites and custodians.Dennis Tabaro, Executive Director of AFRICE, explains that sacred natural sites form the lungs and heart of forests, rivers, lakes and wetlands.
