Empowering Fishermen in Uganda: A Win for Indigenous Communities

The president of Uganda recent directive placing lake management in the hands of indigenous fishermen is a welcome development for indigenous fishing communities across Uganda.

For years, these communities have depended on Lakes for their livelihoods, guided by generations of traditional knowledge about sustainable fishing. The President’s order recognizes their role as custodians of lakes, giving them greater authority to protect fish breeding grounds, fighting illegal fishing, and ensure that benefits from the lakes directly support local families.

The African Institute for Culture and Ecology (AFRICE) working closely with indigenous fishing communities in Uganda to strengthen their capacity in sustainable lake management. we stand in solidarity with these communities as they take a leading role in safeguarding Uganda’s lakes where culture, ecology, and livelihood are deeply intertwined.

Through training in sustainable fishing practices and advocacy for traditional fishing rights, AFRICE is helping these communities restore degraded ecosystems, and secure livelihoods that honor their cultural heritage.
